Working with a Bali digital agency from abroad
More founders are hiring agencies in Bali from outside Indonesia — and not just to save money. Done right, a remote Bali team gives you senior people, a useful time-zone overlap, and a calmer way of working. Done wrong, it's missed messages and slow nights. The difference is almost entirely in how the team is set up. Here's what to look for.
Why hire a Bali agency at all?
- Senior talent at a fair rate. Indonesia's tech scene runs deep — people who've built at serious companies, without Silicon Valley pricing.
- A genuine time-zone bridge. Bali (UTC+8) overlaps a real working day with Australia and most of Asia, and catches the morning in Europe. You can hand off work at the end of your day and wake up to progress.
- A different pace. Smaller, remote-first studios tend to skip the bloat — fewer meetings, fewer middlemen, more building.
How remote delivery actually works
A team that's good at remote doesn't rely on being in the room. In practice that means:
- Working software you can see, early and often — not a big reveal at the end.
- Asynchronous by default. Clear written updates, so progress doesn't depend on catching each other live.
- A few well-chosen calls at a time that works for both sides, not a standing daily meeting in the middle of someone's night.
What to check before you hire
These overlap with the basics of choosing any digital agency in Bali — with a few remote-specific additions:
- Do they already work with overseas clients? Remote-with-clients is a skill; you want a team that's done it, not one improvising.
- How, and when, will we communicate? Agree the overlap hours and the tools up front.
- Who owns the code, accounts and IP? You should — get it in writing.
- How do payments work across borders? Sort the currency, method and invoicing before you start, not after.
- Can you talk to the people building it? Directly — not only to a manager.
The time-zone overlap, concretely
From Bali, a normal working day overlaps comfortably with Australia and Asia, and reaches Europe's morning. For clients in the Americas, the overlap is smaller — workable, but it leans more on good asynchronous habits than on live calls. A team worth hiring will be honest about that with you.
How we work
Hej Labs has been remote-first with our clients since 2020. We're a small senior team, all based in Bali, working with founders across Indonesia and around the world — you talk to the people doing the work, you see progress every week, and you own everything we build.
If you're weighing up a Bali team from abroad, say hej — happy to talk through how it'd work for your time zone before you commit to anything.
